Foundational Family Services -Physical Activity Group for 9-12 year olds (In-Person) 

March 22,29, April 5 and 12th @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Does your child need an opportunity to move and have FUN in a small group setting?

The physical activity group will consist of activities that target fundamental motor skills (i.e. jumping, throwing, kicking, etc.) and active play that supports the development of social skills such as cooperation, turn taking, and communication.

This group will meet weekly for 4 weeks and is designed for children between the ages of 9-12 years old who are registered with the Ontario Autism Program.

There is a maximum of 5 children in this group and is intended for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder who are registered with the Ontario Autism Program (OAP).

Parents are welcome to stay and gather in our boardroom, or pick up their children at the end of the group session.


Foundational Family Services: Expanding Your Child’s Language (Virtual)

This workshop is designed for parents and caregivers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This workshop is targeted at teaching some strategies for taking your child from simple words to getting their needs met using functional communication training.

This workshop is for parents and caregivers of a child with special needs, who are interested in learning more about a positive approach to parenting. This workshop is based on both Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) and Psychology. Parents and Caregivers will learn more about the idea that the way we think will greatly affect our children and their behaviour.

Strategies for a calm transition to bed

This virtual parent and caregiver workshop is designed to give parents and caregivers a variety of antecendent strategies that they can use to help support their child’s successful transition to bed.

This workshop will also provide reactive strategies that parents and caregivers can use when challenging behaviour or difficulty arises during the evening routine. A variety of visuals will also be provided to help support a family evening schedule.

Foundational Family Services: Lego Nights (In -Person) 

April 3 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Show us your best Lego creation or come to hang out with other kids who love Lego too!

Please join the team at Canopy Support Services with a chance for your child to show off their best Lego creations in this mini social skills group. Your child will create a new Lego creation each week, and learn about the importance of appropriate social skills.

Each week will have a new theme for the Lego creation, as well as the social skills topic. Topics include communication, listening and following directions, providing/accepting constructive criticism and recognizing sarcasm, as well as identifying emotions.

1st Session: April 3rd

2nd Session: April 17th

Please note that this group has a maximum number of 10 participants that can attend.

Foundational Family Services: Teen Chill and Chat (In Person)

April 4 @ 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Join the staff at Canopy Support Services in person for a teen hangout! This group is for children diagnosed with Autism, aged 12-17 who would like to work on social skills and life skills.

We are going to be running a variety of teen based activities including basic cooking skills (snacks and simple meals), health and hygiene, nail polish & painting, board games or video games and a “Canopy Grocery Store” simulation.

Want to learn more about the Zones of Regulation (for teaching emotional regulation strategies)?

This virtual parent and caregiver session is aimed at providing you with information about the Zones of Regulation program and how it can be used to teach your child emotional regulation skills.

During this one hour session, parents will be provided with information about the various zones of regulation (i.e., red, yellow, green, and blue zones), as well as a variety of strategies for each of the zones.

There are opportunities to discuss changes to the Ontario Autism Program, and services at Canopy if families are interested. Otherwise, it is a casual and supportive group where parents and caregivers can share with one another.

Please join us if you would like to meet other parents of children and youth with ASD in a positive and caring environment.

Then they should join our Nintendo Switch Hangout session! This hangout is for children aged 7-12 who love all things Nintendo.

Please bring your child’s Switch, (or we have a couple to share) for some fun time to hang out and game together. We will work on social skills on and off screen, while playing Minecraft, Sonic, or your child’s favourite game!

**Your child should also pack a nut safe lunch for this event!

Does your child love to craft? Do they need an activity on the PA day?

Then they should join our PA Day Craft Social for children aged 5-11 years old!

Your child will have the opportunity to meet with other children, participate in a variety of different arts and crafts activities including bracelet making, plant potting, and some fun new activities!

This will include environmental and communicative partner behaviour strategies.

Learning outcomes include learning new function-based strategies for challenging behaviours, how to assess antecedents and consequences and how to utilize positive reinforcement.

Join us virtually for a workshop on how to tackle toilet training!

This workshop is for parents who are interested in tackling toilet training for their child/youth. This group will focus on the pre-requisite or readiness skills required for toilet training, as well as helpful tools that you can use.

This group will also focus on how parents can use a variety of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) strategies including data collection, reinforcement, and prompting to teach their child to use the toilet appropriately.

Time will also be spent on how to handle accidents and what to do if you or your child is experiencing road blocks to their toilet training success!
