Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility

Land Acknowledgement

In recognition of and respect for Indigenous Peoples and Metis People and their territory both in the past and the present. Recognition and Respect are essential elements in establishing healthy and reciprocal relations. It is with a clear and open heart, mind and body that we at Canopy Support Services acknowledge that we are located on the traditional territory of the Mississauga Anishinaabeg and Chippewa Nations. The land we reside upon is situated within the Williams Treaty (1923) and Treaty 20 (1818). Local Indigenous partners remind us that Peterborough's traditional name is Nogojiwanong, (“place at the foot of the rapids” in Anishinaabemowin).  We recognize the Alderville, Beausoleil, Curve Lake, Georgina Island, Hiawatha, Kawartha Nishnawbe, Rama and Scugog First Nations as the original and current stewards’ and caretakers of this land and water ensuring their health for future generations while teaching us about our relations to the earth. We are dedicated to honouring Indigenous history and culture and committed to moving forward in the spirit of reconciliation and respect with all First Nation, Metis and Inuit people. We respect these communities’ strength and resiliency and together we hold space for the ones who came before us and the generations to follow us in our path to truth and reconciliation.

Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA)

Canopy Support Services’ Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee is dedicated to ensuring that human rights and respect for all are fully reflected in our internal operations as well as in our programming. We are committed to addressing and challenging systemic racism, discrimination and oppression, and modelling an inclusive and welcoming workplace built on respect for one another while working towards reconciliation. We continue to address issues and gaps in policies and hiring practices, promote staff engagement, and provide access to learning opportunities, resources and initiatives for all Canopy Support Services staff.

Safe Space

Canopy Support Services is dedicated to facilitating an environment that promotes the fair and respectful treatment of all people and generates an atmosphere where everyone feels welcome, is treated with respect, and is able to fully participate. Our Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee continues our commitment to providing a safer place for our 2SLGBTQ+ individuals and colleagues by creating more accessible services and workplaces.  We’re committed to providing ongoing training for all Canopy Support Services staff and volunteers while reaching out to community members for feedback on the continuing steps needed to create a truly safer space and environment.
