Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are the umbrella term describing the range of effects that can occur in an individual who was exposed to alcohol before birth. These effects can result in physical, cognitive, and behavioural challenges.

With the right support and early interventions, individuals with FASD can build upon their strengths and skills to enhance their quality of life. Our FASD Coordinators utilize strength-based supports to educate the individual and their circle of care to best understand the impact of their disorder. When an individual approaches adulthood, our FASD Coordinators work collaboratively to help develop a support plan, coordinate services and assist with the transition from children’s services to adult services.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for FASD Services, individuals must be:

  • 0 – 18-years-old; 21 if they remain in school

  • Currently living in City of Kawartha Lakes, Peterborough, or Haliburton

  • Diagnosed with or suspected of having FASD*

*NOTE: A diagnosis of FASD is not required to access the support of an FASD Coordinator.

Meet The Team

Meet Shania and Brittany, our FASD Coordinators! We asked them a few questions to get to know them better.

What is your favourite part of working for Canopy Support Services?

I have a few favourtie parts of working for Canopy Support Services! Firstly, Canopy is such a warm and welcoming environment with kind people I am thankful to call my co-workers. Secondly, I am in a role that allows me to raise awareness and advocate for those with FASD and their support systems. It's amazing to be able to work alongside these individuals and meet them where they are at.

I am proud to be a godmother and auntie to the special little ones in my life. I also love dogs, tattoos and poutine!

“Currently, my favourite part of the role is seeing the resiliency of the individuals supported. Many services have transitioned to a virtual format, and it has been amazing to still be so connected.”
